Skills for Business

The "Skills for Business" course enables the trainee to understand and complete a business plan which they can use to borrow money to start their business and monitor the development of that business over the first twelve months.

In addition, the discipline of business skills allows the client to gain more confidence in dealing with all the normal aspects of running their business and they learn transferable business skills should they wish to develop another business in the future.

Skills for Business consists of eight five hour sessions. Each client is given a blank business plan at the outset of the training and will complete the relevant section of it following the training day.

Topics include:

  • Introduction & Marketing An overview of the course. What is marketing and how to plan a marketing strategy.
  • Selling Presentation skills, writing letters and making telephone calls. Planning a sales strategy.
  • Design The importance of visual communication. Looking at business image and the design of logos, stationery and publicity materials.
  • Costing & Pricing Exercises and discussion to understand all the costs associated with making or marketing a product or service, and the important issues to consider when setting the selling price.
  • Bookkeeping To understand how to keep financial records, looking at the different options available and how to operate a simple bookkeeping system for the business.
  • Cash Flow Understanding cash flow and the value of a cash flow to a business.
  • Meet the Experts Specialists from outside agencies, invited in advance to attend this session, offer some guidance on the legal and regulatory aspects to setting up a business.
  • Forward Planning This session is to celebrate the process the participants have been going through over the last few weeks, and a chance to review goals and plan future business strategy.
