Abdul Kamara - Happy Valley Tailoring Centre
"I make clothes for men, for women, for young children. That way, if the men aren't having a buying day, maybe the women will," he says, with a broad grin.
Setting up in business is never easy. When I came here (from Sierra Leone), I didn't know my right hand from my left - business was so completely different!
So when I started at Head for Business, I was thinking, 'is this for me? Is this what I'm supposed to be doing?' But I stayed the second week…the third week…and then I thought, 'This is fantastic, this is JUST what I need to be doing!'
Doing the course made me hungry, hungry to do well. Head for Business cares about me, they call me up to see how I'm doing, they make me warm."
Abdul, a trained tailor, has joined a Business Support Group with four other fashion designers;
"They have the ideas, but not the machine skills. I have both, so I do that for them. In the Business Support Group, we guide each other. It's good to have people to share your ideas with, to try them out. Sometimes they say to me, 'Abdul, where are you going?' Then I can think again!"
Abdul was the first Head for Business client to access a Full Credit loan to buy equipment to start trading. Abdul is now considering employing an assistant and seeking further investment to grow the business.
